KIB105 week two exercise

Spatial montage

Temporal Montage

Reflection
Here is the first weekly exercise I did for KIB105 animation and motion graphics . This is the first time for me to use After Effects. I have used Photoshop and other 3D software for years but I have never used any video editing software before. So I was a bit worry about it. But through the first weekly exercise I felt released. Because I found one of the most important techniques in After Effects is to work with different layers of pictures or videos and then animate or edit them. This is quite like Photoshop which I am familiar with. But there are also huge differences between these two. In Photoshop we only need to deal with layers or effects for still images. But in After Effects, we need to work with not only the still images but also animate them by changing the transforms of the objects such as position, scale, rotation and opacity. I think once the creative work relates to animation it becomes much harder. Sometime it’s very hard to create a smooth animation. There are so many theories about animation. I think the limits of human beings’ eye to accept a moving object is small. It can’t be too quick or slow and the speed of the motion can’t be the same otherwise the animation will become boring and illogical. Although I have studied 3D animation and hand drawing animation during the last couple of semesters, there are still so much more for me to learn in this unit. As a 3D animation student, it is very necessary for me to learn software like After Effects. Every animation project will need to go through the animation editing software. There are so much visual effects that these softwares could provide. So I am very excited about this unit.

Analysis
During the exercise I found the most difficult technique is to control the transform of the objects. The idea about putting different layer together in order is not hard for me to understand because the previous experience of using Photoshop. Cutting the buildings from the background is a time consuming task because some of them are in a complex environment. I could only use the slowest method. I created shadows for the buildings in order to make them look more real in the picture. I also changed the light, level and color for each of them to make them fit into the landscape. But animate the object moving in the scene in not easy. I feel the movement of the buildings in my work is not very logical and smooth because the speeds of the objects are almost the same from the beginning to the end. I really need to work with that in the next few exercises. I also found opacity is a very powerful attribute to control objects. I chose to light up the landscape in the last couple seconds in the animation in order to create more effect.

Understanding and Comprehension
This exercise gave me a basic introduction of After Effect (AE) and the relationship between After Effect and Photoshop (PS). I understand that AE is very much like PS. They all start a project with working on each different layer and then combine them together. I also get the idea about animating the transform of the objects in the scene. This could be the easiest animation in AE, but it’s necessary to learn at the beginning.

andy's final project for KIB325

The music and sound effect is finished by John Zhuang who will be continuing cooperate with me in the next semester.

In this real time project, I used 9 cameras in different positions and angles. I used the script written by Chris on blackboard. But I found something strange in it. Chris created an auto function in the script which will make cameras switch every 5 secs. I don't want this auto function so I block it. And then everything worked just fine. I manually switched the cameras when I use recording the game play video. I download the script called “rotate” from the unity website. This script could make the object rotate one degree in every sec. I load this script to some of my cameras and I am quite happy with the effect. I added some code in the script that paul gave me in order to let leon run.

I recorded two videos when I was playing the game in UNITY by Fraps. And then merge them together in adobe premiere. This is just the preview vision of the project. The battle and any other details will be presented in the next semester

IN THE END, THX PAUL FOR THE ASSISTANCE DURING THE SEMESTER. AND THX JOHN FOR THE MUSIC AND SOUND ADDING. HOPE WE CAN FINISH THE FULL VISION OF IT NEXT SEMESTER.

Thank u for reading

Research about how to create terrain in UNITY

Now I have alrdy finish the animation for the character. What I need to do is to create the real environment for the game. My first thought was try to do this in MAYA. But my friend told me UNITY is very strong with this. So I did some research on Youtube. And I find three very very good tutorial. One Chinese guy taught it. It is very detailed. He teaches how to create terrain in UNITY step by step. The tutorial includes how to sculpt terrain, how to import trees, how to import water, how to create alpha channel in PHOTOSHOP for UNITY and how to render sky for the game. It is really good.

now i have finish the rig...its time for me to start studying now to animate the horse and human...for leon and ava, i could only image how to rig horse and human's hehavior and then merge them together.

first of all i need to know horse's movement

these are some video i found in youtube.

and i also found some interesting animation about centaurs and i feel these could also be helpful for me to define leon and ava's behavior

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6N3giozPbI

there was a Disney animation film named "Fantasia Censored " were created in 1940. this animation was all about centaurs. i watched them and now i have some idea about centaurs' ideal behavior.

Assessment 4 Rig the character

Leon's rig!!!!

This is leon' rig~ i feel so good when i finish it.

this is the joints system i use design for leon. and ava uses the same system as well.

the orange colour is the IK handle..

these are the controllers~~
coz ava has the same joint system, so i will show more pic on her about the joints

Range of leon's movement

he can stand up and move all his legs and arms

runing..

walking..

idle..

about to jump.

jumping..

falling..
Ava's Rig

this is the joint system. it contains two parts. human body and horse body. i rig them separately and then combine them together and then add controller for it.

side view

this is the leg IKs and the horse body IKs.

i used some reverse joints to control the horse feet. coz the feet should able to be moved separately. i use reverse joint to constrain the original feet joints.

this is the human hand joints.

human body joints.

controllers

we can see clearly in the side view. there are three controllers to control the horse body. two controller to control the top part of the two front legs. four controllers for the four legs. and the controllers for the human body. spine low, spine mid, spind high, neck, head, shoulder, elbow and hands.

Range of Ava's movement

runing

walking..

jumping..

Load the rig character into game engine

i try to export these two character as FBX file and then load into unity. they look fine now~

research about how to rig a horse and human

before start rig my character i want do some research about how to rig a horse and human.

its the first time for me to rig a character. i never done that before. in last semester i animated the characters that have alrdy been rigged.

centaur contains hunman body and horse body. this makes the rig harder for me coz i have to understand how to rig both of them and then combine them together.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSJcCFNZYO4 this is a link to a horse rig tutioral.

i brought a vedio tutorial when i was in shanghai last year. it has two hole sections talking about how to rig a horse and rig human . it is very helpful!! im watching these tuts at the monment. but i cant pose these to the blog..the software dont allow me to screen capture......

and i found some very good vedio tutorials on http://www.digitaltutors.com/
i paid 45 dollars to sign up and downloaded some very very good tutorials... these are all super great stuff i have found and im watching these now~ hope i will be doing good on the rig~~~
